Early Life and Marriage

The commencement of the Divine Inspiration to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was in the form of true dreams, after which he developed a love for seclusion and would worship in the cave of Hira, taking provisions from Khadijah.1,2 When the Truth descended upon him in the cave of Hira, the Prophet ﷺ returned to Khadijah with his heart beating rapidly, asking her to wrap him.3,4 Khadijah took the Prophet ﷺ to Waraqa bin Naufal, a Christian convert who read the Gospels in Arabic, and Waraqa identified the angel as the same one sent to Moses.3

Status and Virtues

The Prophet ﷺ stated that Khadijah is the best among the women of this nation.5 Gabriel conveyed a greeting to Khadijah from her Lord (Allah) and gave her the glad tidings of a palace in Paradise built of Qasab, where there would be neither noise nor fatigue.6 Aisha reported that she did not envy any woman as much as she envied Khadijah, because the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave her glad tidings of a house in Paradise made of Qasab, without clamoring nor discomforts.7,8

Remembrance and Legacy

Khadijah died three years before the Prophet ﷺ departed to Medina.9 Aisha stated that she did not feel jealous of any woman as much as she did of Khadijah, because the Prophet ﷺ used to mention her very often, and whenever he slaughtered a sheep, he would send a good share of its meat among her friends.10,11 When Hala bint Khuwailid, Khadijah's sister, asked permission to enter, the Prophet ﷺ remembered Khadijah's way of asking permission, which upset him.12,13
