Sahih Muslim, 5403

Rapporté par Ibn Umar : Omar vit Utarid al-Tamimi au marché vendre des vêtements en soie. C’était quelqu’un qui se rendait chez les rois et leur vendait ces habits à prix élevé. Omar dit : « Ô Messager d’Allah, j’ai vu Utarid au marché avec un vêtement de soie ; si seulement tu l’achetais pour le porter lors de la réception des délégations arabes qui te rendent visite ! » (Le narrateur dit : Je crois qu’il a aussi dit : « Tu pourrais aussi le porter le vendredi. ») Le Messager d’Allah ﷺ répondit : « Celui qui porte de la soie dans ce monde n’aura aucune part dans l’au-delà. » Plus tard, lorsque ces vêtements en soie furent présentés au Messager d’Allah ﷺ, il en offrit un à Omar, un à Usama ibn Zayd, et un à Ali ibn Abu Talib, en disant : « Déchirez-les et faites-en des couvre-chefs pour vos femmes. » Omar revint avec le vêtement et dit : « Ô Messager d’Allah, tu me l’as envoyé alors que tu as dit hier ce que tu as dit à propos du vêtement de soie d’Utarid. » Le Prophète ﷺ répondit : « Je ne te l’ai pas envoyé pour que tu le portes, mais pour que tu en tires un bénéfice. » Usama mit le vêtement et semblait content, mais le Messager d’Allah ﷺ le regarda d’une façon qui montrait qu’il n’aimait pas cela. Usama demanda : « Ô Messager d’Allah, pourquoi me regardes-tu ainsi alors que c’est toi qui me l’as donné ? » Il répondit : « Je ne te l’ai pas donné pour que tu le portes, mais pour que tu le déchires et en fasses des couvre-chefs pour tes femmes. »

Ibn Umar reported that Umar saw Utarid al-Tamimi standing in the market (and selling) the silk garments, and he was the person who went to (courts of) kings and got (high prices) for these garments from them. Umar said:Allah's Messenger I saw 'Utarid standing in the market with a silk garment; would that you buy and wear it for (receiving) the delegations of Arabs when they visit you? I (the narrator) said: I think he ('Umar) also said: You may wear it on Friday (also). Thereupon, Allah's Messenger (may peace he upon him) said: He who wears silk in this world has no share in the Hereafter. Later on when these silk garments were presented to Allah's Massenger (ﷺ) he presented one silk garment to 'Umar and presented one also to Usama b. Zaid and gave one to 'Ali b. Abu 'Talib. saying: Tear them and make head coverings for your ladies. 'Umar came carrying his garment and said: Allah's Messenger, you have sent it to me, whereas you had said yesterday about the (silk) garment of Utarid what you had to say. He (the Holy Prophet) said: I have not sent it to you that you wear it, but I have sent It to you so that you may derive benefit out of it; and Usama (donned) the garment (presented to him) and appeared to be brisk, whereupon Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) looked at him with a look by which he perceived that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) did not like what he had done. He said: Allah's Messenger. why is it that you look at me like this. whereas you yourself presented it to me? He said: I never sent it to you to wear it, but I sent It to you so that you may tear it and make out head covering for your ladies
