Muwatta Malik, 1769

Malik related to me from Abu'n-Nasr that Ubaydullah ibn Abdullah ibn Utba ibn Masud went to visit Abu Talha al-Ansari when he was ill. He said, "I found Sahl ibn Hunayf with him. Abu Talha summoned a man and removed a rug which was under him. Sahl ibn Hunayf said to him, 'Why did you remove it?' He said, 'Because there were pictures on it, and the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said what you know about them.' Sahl replied, 'Didn't the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say, "except for markings on a garment?"' (A rug was considered a garment). He said, 'Yes, but it is more pleasing to myself

Oubaidallah Ibn Abdallah Ibn Outba Ibn Mass'oud a rapporté qu'en rendant visite à Abou Talha Al-Ansari, lors de sa maladie, il y trouva chez lui Sahl Ibn Hounaif. Abou Talha demandant à un homme de tirer au-dessous de lui une tapisserie, Sahl Ibn Hounaif lui dit: «Pourquoi l'enlèves-tu»? Il lui répondit: «Parce qu'elle porte des dessins; or l'Envoyé d'Allah r (salallahou alayhi wa salam) (Sur lui la grâce et la paix d'Allah) l'a interdit, comme tu le sais». Sahl répliqua:«Mais l'Envoyé d'Allah r (salallahou alayhi wa salam) (Sur lui la grâce et la paix d'Allah) n'a-t-il pas précisé: «Sauf si c'est un dessin sur un vêtement»? Abou Talha, alors, dit: «Certes oui! mais ainsi j'en serai plus apaisé
