Sahih al-Bukhari, 2041

Narrated `Amra bint `Abdur-Rahman from `Aisha:Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) used to practice I`tikaf every year in the month of Ramadan. And after offering the morning prayer, he used to enter the place of his I`tikaf. `Aisha asked his permission to let her practice I`tikaf and he allowed her, and so she pitched a tent in the mosque. When Hafsa heard of that, she also pitched a tent (for herself), and when Zainab heard of that, she too pitched another tent. When, in the morning, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) had finished the morning prayer, he saw four tents and asked, "What is this?" He was informed about it. He then said, "What made them do this? Is it righteousness? Remove the tents, for I do not want to see them." So, the tents were removed. The Prophet (ﷺ) did not perform I`tikaf that year in the month of Ramadan, but did it in the last ten days of Shawwal

Rapporté par `Amra bint `Abdur-Rahman, de la part de `Aisha : Le Messager d’Allah ﷺ faisait l’I`tikaf chaque année pendant le mois de Ramadan. Après la prière du matin, il entrait dans le lieu de son I`tikaf. `Aisha lui a demandé la permission de faire l’I`tikaf et il a accepté, alors elle a monté une tente dans la mosquée. Quand Hafsa l’a appris, elle a aussi monté une tente pour elle-même, et quand Zaynab l’a su, elle a également installé une autre tente. Le matin, quand le Messager d’Allah ﷺ a fini la prière du matin, il a vu quatre tentes et a demandé : « Qu’est-ce que c’est ? » On l’a informé. Il a alors dit : « Qu’est-ce qui les a poussées à faire cela ? Est-ce de la piété ? Enlevez les tentes, je ne veux pas les voir. » Les tentes ont donc été retirées. Le Prophète ﷺ n’a pas fait l’I`tikaf cette année-là pendant le Ramadan, mais il l’a fait pendant les dix derniers jours de Shawwal
