Sahih Muslim, 1783

Rapporté par Aïsha رضي الله عنها : Le Messager d’Allah ﷺ a prié une nuit à la mosquée et des gens ont prié avec lui. La nuit suivante, il a prié et il y avait encore plus de monde. Puis, la troisième ou la quatrième nuit, beaucoup de gens se sont rassemblés, mais le Messager d’Allah ﷺ n’est pas sorti pour diriger la prière de Tarawih. Au matin, il a dit : « J’ai vu ce que vous faisiez, mais je ne suis pas venu à vous parce que je craignais que cette prière ne devienne obligatoire pour vous. » (Le narrateur précise : c’était pendant le Ramadan)

A'isha reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prayed one night in the mosque and people also prayed along with him. He then prayed on the following night and there were many persons. Then on the third or fourth night (many people) gathered there, but the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) did not come out to them (for leading the Tarawih prayer). When it was morning he said:I saw what you were doing, but I desisted to come to you (and lead the prayer) for I feared that this prayer might become obligatory for you. (He the narrator) said: It was the month of Ramadan
