Sahih al-Bukhari, 6718

Rapporté par Abu Musa Al-Ash`ari : Je suis allé voir le Messager d’Allah (ﷺ) avec un groupe de gens de la tribu des Al-Ash`ari pour lui demander des montures. Le Prophète (ﷺ) a dit : « Par Allah, je ne vous donnerai rien pour monter, et je n’ai rien pour vous transporter. » Nous sommes restés là aussi longtemps qu’Allah l’a voulu, puis des chameaux ont été apportés au Prophète et il a ordonné qu’on nous donne trois chameaux. Quand nous sommes partis, certains d’entre nous ont dit aux autres : « Allah ne nous bénira pas, car nous sommes tous allés demander des montures au Messager d’Allah (ﷺ), et même s’il avait juré de ne pas nous en donner, il l’a fait. » Nous sommes donc retournés auprès du Prophète et lui avons raconté cela. Il a dit : « Ce n’est pas moi qui vous ai donné des montures, mais Allah. Par Allah, si jamais je fais un serment et que je vois ensuite qu’il y a mieux à faire, j’expie mon serment et je fais ce qui est meilleur. »

Narrated Abu Musa Al-Ash`ari:I went to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) along with a group of people from (the tribe of) Al-Ash`ari, asking for mounts. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "By Allah, I will not give you anything to ride, and I have nothing to mount you on." We stayed there as long as Allah wished, and after that, some camels were brought to the Prophet and he ordered that we be given three camels. When we set out, some of us said to others, "Allah will not bless us, as we all went to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) asking him for mounts, and although he had sworn that he would not give us mounts, he did give us." So we returned to the Prophet; and mentioned that to him. He said, "I have not provided you with mounts, but Allah has. By Allah, Allah willing, if I ever take an oath, and then see that another is better than the first, I make expiation for my (dissolved) oath, and do what is better and make expiation
