Sahih al-Bukhari, 6277

Rapporté par `Abdullah bin `Amr : On a parlé au Prophète (ﷺ) de mon jeûne. Il est donc venu me voir et j’ai mis devant lui un coussin en cuir rempli de fibres de palmier. Le Prophète (ﷺ) s’est assis par terre, le coussin entre lui et moi. Il m’a dit : « Est-ce que cela ne te suffit pas de jeûner trois jours par mois ? » J’ai répondu : « Ô Messager d’Allah (ﷺ) ! (Je peux faire plus.) » Il a dit : « (Tu peux jeûner) cinq jours par mois. » J’ai dit : « Ô Messager d’Allah (ﷺ) ! (Je peux faire plus.) » Il a dit : « (Tu peux jeûner) sept jours. » J’ai dit : « Ô Messager d’Allah ! » Il a dit : « Neuf. » J’ai dit : « Ô Messager d’Allah (ﷺ) ! » Il a dit : « Onze. » J’ai dit : « Ô Messager d’Allah (ﷺ) ! » Il a dit : « Aucun jeûne n’est meilleur que celui du Prophète (ﷺ) David, qui jeûnait la moitié de l’année, c’est-à-dire un jour sur deux. »

Narrated `Abdullah bin `Amr:The news of my fasting was mentioned to the Prophet (ﷺ) . So he entered upon me and I put for him a leather cushion stuffed with palm-fibres. The Prophet (ﷺ) sat on the floor and the cushion was between me and him. He said to me, "Isn't it sufficient for you (that you fast) three days a month?" I said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! (I can fast more than this)." He said, "You may fast) five days a month." I said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! (I can fast more than this)." He said, "(You may fast) seven days." I said, "O Allah's Apostle!" He said, "Nine." I said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)!" He said, "Eleven." I said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)!" He said, "No fasting is superior to the fasting of (the Prophet David (ﷺ)) which was one half of a year, and he used, to fast on alternate days. (See Hadith No. 300, Vol)
