Qur'anic depiction of the inhabitants

The Qur'an exhorts the people of Madinah and the surrounding Bedouins not to stay behind the Messenger when he goes out to fight, urging them to sacrifice themselves rather than prioritize personal safety.1 The Qur'an mentions that among the people of Madinah there were hypocrites accustomed to hypocrisy, who will be punished twice in this world and then face a great punishment in the Hereafter.2 The Qur'an warns that hypocrites and rumor‑mongers in Madinah who do not cease will be incited against, and their presence will be brief.3 The Qur'an praises the settled believers of Madinah who embraced faith before the emigrants, saying they love the emigrants, give them preference despite their own privation, and that those protected from selfishness will be successful.4
