Obligation and Reward

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said that performing Hajj to the House, provided one has the ability for its passage, is one of five things that, if observed with faith, will lead to Paradise.1 A Hajj Mabrur, which is an accepted Hajj, brings no less a reward than Paradise.2,3,4 Allah commands people to complete the Hajj and 'Umrah for Him.5

The Ancient House and its Purpose

The Quran mentions that Allah designated for Abraham the site of the House, instructing him not to associate anything with Him and to purify His House for those who perform Tawaf, stand in prayer, and bow and prostrate.6 Pilgrims are to perform Tawaf around the ancient House.7 The place of sacrifice for animals marked for sacrifice during Hajj is at the ancient House.8

Rites and Prohibitions

The Hajj is during well-known months, and whoever has made Hajj obligatory upon himself therein must abstain from sexual relations, disobedience, and disputing during Hajj.9 If pilgrims are prevented from completing the Hajj, they should offer what can be obtained with ease of sacrificial animals, and not shave their heads until the sacrificial animal has reached its place of slaughter.5 The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went between As-Safa and Al-Marwah, and this became part of Hajj.10

Proclamation and Gathering

Allah commanded to proclaim the Hajj to the people, and they will come on foot and on every lean camel, from every distant pass.11 The time of the Hajj is the well-known months, starting with the month of Shawwāl and ending on the 10th of Dhū Al-Ḥijjah.12
