A'isha said in connection with the verse:" And if a woman has reason to fear ill-treatment from her husband or that he might turn away from her" (iv. 128) that it was revealed in case of a woman who had long association with a person (as his wife) and now he intends to divorce her and she says: Do not divorce me, but retain me (as wife in your house) and you are permitted to live with another wife. It is in this context that this verse was revealed

Rapporté par Aïsha رضي الله عنها : À propos du verset : « Et si une femme craint de la part de son mari un mauvais traitement ou qu’il se détourne d’elle » (4 : 128), cela a été révélé à propos d’une femme qui vivait longtemps avec un homme (comme épouse) et que celui-ci voulait la divorcer. Elle lui disait alors : « Ne me divorce pas, garde-moi (comme épouse dans ta maison) et tu peux vivre avec une autre épouse. » C’est dans ce contexte que ce verset a été révélé
