Muwatta Malik, 423

Yahya related to me from Malik that he had heard from Amir ibn Sad ibn Abi Waqqas that his father said, "There were two brothers, one of whom died forty nights before the other. The merit of the first was being mentioned in the presence of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and he said, 'Wasn't the other one a muslim?' They said, 'Of course, Messenger of Allah, and there was no harm in him.' The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'What will make you realise what his prayer has brought him. The prayer is like a deep river of sweet water running by your door into which you plunge five times a day. How much of your dirtiness do you think that will leave? You do not realise what his prayer has brought him

Sa'id Ibn Abi Waqas a rapporté d'après son père qu'il a raconté: «Il y avait deux frères, dont l'un périt avant l'autre de quarante nuits. Comme on venait de mentionner les vertus du premier auprès de l'Envoyé d'Allah (salallahou alayhi wa salam) r (Sur lui la grâce et la paix d'Allah) il demanda: «l'autre, n'était-il pas musulman»? On lui répondit: «Certes, oui, ô Envoyé d'Allah, et il n'était pas mauvais». L'Envoyé d'Allah (salallahou alayhi wa salam) r (Sur lui la grâce et la paix d'Allah) répliqua: «Savez-vous où ses prières l'ont-elles conduit? Or la prière est comparable à une rivière dont l'eau est abondante et pure, qui passe devant la porte de l'un de vous où il se lave cinq fois par jour. Que pensez-vous après cela? Lui resterait-il, la moindre crasse? Vous ignorez, donc, où est-il parvenu grâce à ses prières»
