Sahih al-Bukhari, 6134

Narrated `Abdullah bin `Amr:Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) entered upon me and said, "Have I not been informed that you offer prayer all the night and fast the whole day?" I said, "Yes." He said, "Do not do so; Offer prayer at night and also sleep; Fast for a few days and give up fasting for a few days because your body has a right on you, and your eye has a right on you, and your guest has a right on you, and your wife has a right on you. I hope that you will have a long life, and it is sufficient for you to fast for three days a month as the reward of a good deed, is multiplied ten times, that means, as if you fasted the whole year." I insisted (on fasting more) so I was given a hard instruction. I said, "I can do more than that (fasting)" The Prophet said, "Fast three days every week." But as I insisted (on fasting more) so I was burdened. I said, "I can fast more than that." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Fast as Allah's prophet David used to fast." I said, "How was the fasting of the prophet David?" The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "One half of a year (i.e. he used to fast on alternate days)

Rapporté par `Abdullah bin `Amr : Le Messager d’Allah (ﷺ) est venu me voir et a dit : « N’ai-je pas appris que tu pries toute la nuit et que tu jeûnes toute la journée ? » J’ai répondu : « Oui. » Il a dit : « Ne fais pas cela ; prie une partie de la nuit et dors aussi ; jeûne certains jours et arrête-toi certains jours, car ton corps a des droits sur toi, tes yeux ont des droits sur toi, ton invité a des droits sur toi, et ta femme a des droits sur toi. J’espère que tu vivras longtemps, et il te suffit de jeûner trois jours par mois, car la récompense d’une bonne action est multipliée par dix, ce qui revient à jeûner toute l’année. » J’ai insisté (pour jeûner plus) alors j’ai reçu une consigne plus difficile. J’ai dit : « Je peux faire plus que cela (jeûner). » Le Prophète a dit : « Jeûne trois jours chaque semaine. » Mais comme j’ai continué à insister, on m’a imposé une règle plus stricte. J’ai dit : « Je peux jeûner plus que cela. » Le Prophète (ﷺ) a dit : « Jeûne comme le faisait le prophète Dawud. » J’ai demandé : « Comment jeûnait le prophète Dawud ? » Le Prophète (ﷺ) a répondu : « La moitié de l’année, c’est-à-dire un jour sur deux. »
