Narrated Ibn `Umar:When `Abdullah bin Ubai died, his son `Abdullah bin `Abdullah came to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) who gave his shirt to him and ordered him to shroud his father in it. Then he stood up to offer the funeral prayer for the deceased, but `Umar bin Al-Khattab took hold of his garment and said, "Do you offer the funeral prayer for him though he was a hypocrite and Allah has forbidden you to ask forgiveness for hypocrites?" The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Allah has given me the choice (or Allah has informed me) saying: "Whether you, O Muhammad, ask forgiveness for them, or do not ask forgiveness for them, even if you ask forgiveness for them seventy times, Allah will not forgive them," (9.80) Then he added, "I will (appeal to Allah for his sake) more than seventy times." So Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) offered the funeral prayer for him and we too, offered the prayer along with him. Then Allah revealed: "And never, O Muhammad, pray (funeral prayer) for anyone of them that dies, nor stand at his grave. Certainly they disbelieved in Allah and His Apostle and died in a state of rebellion

Rapporté par Ibn ‘Umar : Lorsque ‘Abdullah ibn Ubayy mourut, son fils ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abdullah vint auprès du Messager d’Allah ﷺ, qui lui donna sa tunique et lui ordonna d’envelopper son père dedans. Puis il se leva pour prier sur lui, mais ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab le retint par son vêtement et dit : « Vas-tu prier sur lui alors qu’il est hypocrite, et qu’Allah t’a interdit de demander pardon pour eux ? » Le Prophète ﷺ dit : « Allah m’a seulement donné le choix ou m’a informé en disant : {Demande pardon pour eux ou ne demande pas pardon pour eux ; même si tu demandes pardon pour eux soixante-dix fois, Allah ne leur pardonnera jamais.} » Il ajouta : « Je vais demander plus que soixante-dix fois. » Le Messager d’Allah ﷺ pria donc sur lui, et nous avons prié avec lui, puis Allah fit descendre : {Et ne prie jamais sur l’un d’eux qui meurt, et ne te tiens pas sur sa tombe. Ils ont mécru en Allah et en Son Messager et sont morts en état de perversité}
