Sahih al-Bukhari, 3717

Narrated Marwan bin Al-Hakam:`Uthman bin `Affan was afflicted with severe nose-bleeding in the year when such illness was prevelant and that prevented him from performing Hajj, and (because of it) he made his will. A man from Quraish came to him and said, "Appoint your successor." `Uthman asked, "Did the people name him? (i.e. the successor) the man said, "Yes." `Uthman asked, "Who is that?" The man remained silent. Another man came to `Uthman and I think it was Al-Harith. He also said, "Appoint your successor." `Uthman asked, "Did the people name him?" The man replied "Yes." `Uthman said, "Who is that?" The man remained silent. `Uthman said, "Perhaps they have mentioned Az-Zubair?" The man said, "Yes." `Uthman said, "By Him in Whose Hands my life is, he is the best of them as I know, and the dearest of them to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)

Rapporté par Marwan bin Al-Hakam : ‘Uthman ibn ‘Affan a eu de graves saignements de nez l’année où cette maladie était répandue, ce qui l’a empêché de faire le Hajj, et à cause de cela, il a rédigé son testament. Un homme de Quraysh est venu le voir et lui a dit : « Désigne ton successeur. » ‘Uthman a demandé : « Les gens l’ont-ils nommé ? (c’est-à-dire le successeur) » L’homme a répondu : « Oui. » ‘Uthman a demandé : « Qui est-ce ? » L’homme est resté silencieux. Un autre homme est venu voir ‘Uthman, et je pense que c’était Al-Harith. Il a aussi dit : « Désigne ton successeur. » ‘Uthman a demandé : « Les gens l’ont-ils nommé ? » L’homme a répondu : « Oui. » ‘Uthman a dit : « Qui est-ce ? » L’homme est resté silencieux. ‘Uthman a dit : « Peut-être ont-ils mentionné Az-Zubair ? » L’homme a dit : « Oui. » ‘Uthman a dit : « Par Celui qui détient ma vie dans Sa main, c’est le meilleur d’entre eux à ma connaissance, et le plus cher au Messager d’Allah (ﷺ). »
