Sahih al-Bukhari, 3374

Narrated Abu Huraira:Some people asked the Prophet: "Who is the most honorable amongst the people?" He replied, "The most honorable among them is the one who is the most Allah-fearing." They said, "O Allah's Prophet! We do not ask about this." He said, "Then the most honorable person is Joseph, Allah's Prophet, the son of Allah's Prophet, the son of Allah's Prophet, the son of Allah's Khalil." They said, "We do not ask about this." He said, "Then you want to ask me about the Arabs' descent?" They said, "Yes." He said, "Those who were best in the pre-Islamic period, are the best in Islam, if they comprehend (the religious knowledge)

Rapporté par Abu Huraira : Des gens ont demandé au Prophète : « Qui est la personne la plus honorable parmi les gens ? » Il a répondu : « Le plus honorable est celui qui craint le plus Allah. » Ils ont dit : « Ô Prophète d’Allah ! Ce n’est pas cela que nous voulons savoir. » Il a dit : « Alors, la personne la plus honorable est Joseph, Prophète d’Allah, fils d’un Prophète d’Allah, fils d’un Prophète d’Allah, fils du Khalil d’Allah. » Ils ont dit : « Ce n’est pas cela que nous demandons. » Il a dit : « Vous voulez donc parler de la lignée des Arabes ? » Ils ont répondu : « Oui. » Il a dit : « Ceux qui étaient les meilleurs avant l’Islam sont les meilleurs dans l’Islam, s’ils comprennent la religion. »
