Sahih al-Bukhari, 1368

Narrated Abu Al-Aswad:I came to Medina when an epidemic had broken out. While I was sitting with `Umar bin Al-Khattab a funeral procession passed by and the people praised the deceased. `Umar said, "It has been affirmed to him." And another funeral procession passed by and the people praised the deceased. `Umar said, "It has been affirmed to him." A third (funeral procession) passed by and the people spoke badly of the deceased. He said, "It has been affirmed to him." I (Abu Al-Aswad) asked, "O chief of the believers! What has been affirmed?" He replied, "I said the same as the Prophet (ﷺ) had said, that is: if four persons testify the piety of a Muslim, Allah will grant him Paradise." We asked, "If three persons testify his piety?" He (the Prophet) replied, "Even three." Then we asked, "If two?" He replied, "Even two." We did not ask him regarding one witness

Rapporté par Abu Al-Aswad : Je suis venu à Médine alors qu’une épidémie sévissait. Pendant que j’étais assis avec `Umar bin Al-Khattab, un cortège funéraire passa et les gens firent l’éloge du défunt. `Umar dit : « Cela lui a été confirmé. » Un autre cortège funéraire passa et les gens firent aussi l’éloge du défunt. `Umar dit : « Cela lui a été confirmé. » Un troisième cortège passa et les gens parlèrent mal du défunt. Il dit : « Cela lui a été confirmé. » Je demandai : « Ô chef des croyants ! Qu’est-ce qui a été confirmé ? » Il répondit : « J’ai dit la même chose que le Prophète (ﷺ) avait dite, c’est-à-dire : si quatre personnes témoignent de la piété d’un musulman, Allah lui accordera le Paradis. » Nous avons demandé : « Et si trois personnes témoignent de sa piété ? » Il (le Prophète) répondit : « Même trois. » Puis nous avons demandé : « Et si deux ? » Il répondit : « Même deux. » Nous ne lui avons pas demandé pour un seul témoin
