Sunan Abi Dawud, 972

Narrated AbuMusa al-Ash'ari: Hittan ibn Abdullah ar-Ruqashi said: AbuMusa al-Ash'ari led us in prayer. When he sat at the end of his prayer, one of the people said: Prayer has been established by virtue and purity. When AbuMusa returned (from his prayer or finished his prayer), he gave his attention to the people, and said: Which of you is the speaker of such and such words? The people remained silent. Which of you is the speaker of such and such words? The people remained silent. He said: You might have said them, Hittan. He replied: I did not say them. I was afraid you might punish me. One of the people said: I said them and I did not intend by them (anything) except good. AbuMusa said: Do you not know how you utter (them) in your prayer? The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) addressed us, and taught us and explained to us our way of doing and taught us our prayer. He said: When you pray a (congregational) prayer, straighten your rows, then one of you should lead you in prayer. When he says the takbir (Allah is Most Great), say the takbir, and when he recites verses "Not of those upon whom is Thy anger, nor of those who err" (i.e. the end of Surah i.), say Amin; Allah will favour you. When he says "Allah is most great," and bows, say "Allah is most great" and bow, for the imam will bow before you, and will raise (his head) before you. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: This is for that. When he says "Allah listens to the one who praises Him," say: "O Allah, our Lord, to Thee be praise, Allah be praised," Allah will listen to you, for Allah, the Exalted, said by the tongue of His Prophet (ﷺ): "Allah listens to the one who praises Him." When he says "Allah is most great" and prostrates, say: "Allah is most great" and prostrate, for the imam prostrates before you and raises his head before you. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: This is for that. When he sits, each one of you should say "The adorations of the tongue, all good things, and acts of worship are due to Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and Allah's mercy and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon Allah's upright servants. I testify that there is no god but Allah, and I testify that Muhammad is His servant and Apostle." This version of Ahmad does not mention the words "and His blessings" nor the phrase "and I testify"; instead, it has the words "that Muhammad

Rapporté par Abu Musa al-Ash’ari : Hittan ibn Abdullah ar-Ruqashi a dit : Abu Musa al-Ash’ari nous a dirigés dans la prière. Lorsqu’il s’est assis à la fin de sa prière, l’un des gens a dit : « La prière a été établie par la vertu et la pureté. » Quand Abu Musa est revenu (de sa prière ou l’a terminée), il s’est tourné vers les gens et a dit : « Qui parmi vous a prononcé ces paroles ? » Les gens sont restés silencieux. « Qui parmi vous a prononcé ces paroles ? » Les gens sont restés silencieux. Il a dit : « C’est peut-être toi, Hittan. » Il a répondu : « Ce n’est pas moi. J’ai eu peur que tu me punisses. » L’un des gens a dit : « C’est moi qui les ai dites et je n’avais aucune mauvaise intention. » Abu Musa a dit : « Ne savez-vous pas comment vous devez parler dans votre prière ? Le Messager d’Allah ﷺ nous a enseignés, nous a expliqué notre façon de faire et nous a appris notre prière. Il a dit : Lorsque vous priez en groupe, alignez vos rangs, puis l’un de vous doit diriger la prière. Quand il dit le takbir (“Allah est le plus grand”), dites le takbir, et quand il récite les versets “Non pas ceux qui ont encouru Ta colère, ni ceux qui se sont égarés” (c’est-à-dire la fin de la sourate 1), dites Amin ; Allah vous accordera Sa faveur. Quand il dit “Allah est le plus grand” et s’incline, dites “Allah est le plus grand” et inclinez-vous, car l’imam s’incline avant vous et se relève avant vous. Le Messager d’Allah ﷺ a dit : “C’est pour cela.” Quand il dit “Allah entend celui qui Le loue”, dites : “Ô Allah, notre Seigneur, à Toi la louange, qu’Allah soit loué”, Allah vous écoutera, car Allah, le Très-Haut, a dit par la langue de Son Prophète ﷺ : “Allah entend celui qui Le loue.” Quand il dit “Allah est le plus grand” et se prosterne, dites “Allah est le plus grand” et prosternez-vous, car l’imam se prosterne avant vous et se relève avant vous. Le Messager d’Allah ﷺ a dit : “C’est pour cela.” Quand il s’assied, que chacun de vous dise : “Les louanges de la langue, toutes les bonnes choses et les actes d’adoration reviennent à Allah. Paix sur toi, ô Prophète, ainsi que la miséricorde d’Allah et Sa bénédiction. Paix sur nous et sur les serviteurs vertueux d’Allah. J’atteste qu’il n’y a pas de divinité en dehors d’Allah, et j’atteste que Muhammad est Son serviteur et Son Messager.” » Cette version d’Ahmad ne mentionne pas les mots « et Sa bénédiction » ni la phrase « et j’atteste » ; elle contient plutôt les mots « que Muhammad… »
