Sunan Abi Dawud, 3534

Narrated Yusuf ibn Malik al-Makki: I used to write (the account of) the expenditure incurred on orphans who were under the guardianship of so-and-so. They cheated him by one thousand dirhams and he paid these (this amount) to them. I then got double the property which they deserved. I said (to the man: Take one thousand (dirhams) which they have taken from you (by cheating). He said: No, my father has told me that he heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: Pay the deposit to him who deposited it with you, and do not betray him who betrays you

Rapporté par Yusuf ibn Malik al-Makki : J’écrivais les comptes des dépenses engagées pour des orphelins sous la tutelle d’un certain homme. Ils l’ont trompé de mille dirhams et il leur a versé cette somme. J’ai ensuite reçu le double de ce qu’ils méritaient. J’ai dit à cet homme : « Prends les mille dirhams qu’ils t’ont pris en te trompant. » Il répondit : « Non, mon père m’a dit qu’il avait entendu le Messager d’Allah ﷺ dire : “Rends le dépôt à celui qui te l’a confié, et ne trahis pas celui qui t’a trahi.” »
