Sunan Abi Dawud, 2864

Narrated 'Amir b. Sa'd:On the authority of his father (Sa'd b. Abi Waqqas): When he (Sa'd) fell ill at Mecca (according to the version of Ibn Abi Kkalaf) - then the agreed version has: which brought him near to death - the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) went to visit him. He said: Messenger of Allah, I have a large amount of property, and my daughter is my only heir. May I give two-thirds (of my property) as a sadaqah (charity)? He said: No. He asked: Then a half ? He replied: No. He asked: Then one-third ? He replied: (You may will away) a third and third is a lot. To leave your heirs rich is better than to leave them poor begging from people. You will not spend anything, seeking thereby to please Allah, without being rewarded for it, even the mouthful you give your wife. I said: Messenger of Allah, shall I be left behind form immigration (to Medina)? He said: If you remain behind after me and do good works seeking the pleasure of Allah, your rank will be raised and degree increased. Perhaps you will not remain behind, and some people will benefit from you and others will be harmed by you. He then said: O Allah, complete the immigration of my Companions and do not turn them back. But miserable was Sa'd b. Khawlah. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) lamented on him as he died at Mecca

Rapporté par ‘Amir ibn Sa’d, d’après son père (Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas) : Lorsqu’il (Sa’d) est tombé malade à La Mecque (selon la version d’Ibn Abi Khalaf) – puis la version commune précise : une maladie qui l’a rapproché de la mort – le Messager d’Allah ﷺ est venu lui rendre visite. Il a dit : « Messager d’Allah, j’ai beaucoup de biens et ma fille est mon unique héritière. Puis-je donner les deux tiers de mes biens en aumône ? » Il a répondu : « Non. » Il a demandé : « Alors la moitié ? » Il a répondu : « Non. » Il a demandé : « Alors le tiers ? » Il a répondu : « (Que tu lègues) un tiers, et un tiers c’est déjà beaucoup. Laisser tes héritiers riches vaut mieux que de les laisser pauvres à mendier auprès des gens. Tu ne dépenseras rien pour plaire à Allah sans en être récompensé, même la bouchée que tu donnes à ta femme. » J’ai dit : « Messager d’Allah, vais-je être laissé en arrière pour l’émigration (vers Médine) ? » Il a dit : « Si tu restes après moi et fais de bonnes œuvres pour plaire à Allah, ton rang sera élevé et ton degré augmenté. Peut-être ne resteras-tu pas, et certains profiteront de toi tandis que d’autres seront affectés par toi. » Puis il a dit : « Ô Allah, complète l’émigration de mes compagnons et ne les fais pas revenir en arrière. » Mais Sa’d ibn Khawlah a été malheureux. Le Messager d’Allah ﷺ s’est attristé pour lui car il est mort à La Mecque
