Sunan Abi Dawud, 1475

Umar b. al-Khattab said:I heard Hisham b. Hakim (b. Hizam) reciting Surah al-Furqan in a different manner from my way of reciting, and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) had taught me to recite it. I nearly spoke sharply to him, but I delayed till he had finished. Then I caught his cloak at the neck, and I brought him to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). I said: Messenger of Allah, I heard this man reciting Surah al-Furqan in a manner different from that in which you taught me to recite it. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) the told him to recite it. He then recited in the manner I heard him recite. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Thus was it sent down. He then said to me: Recite, I recited (it). He then said: Thus was it sent down. He said: The Qur'an was sent down in seven modes of reading, so recite according to what comes most easily

Rapporté par Omar ibn al-Khattab رضي الله عنه alors qu’il donnait un sermon : J’ai entendu Hisham ibn Hakim réciter la sourate al-Furqan d’une manière différente de celle que j’avais apprise du Messager d’Allah ﷺ. J’ai failli lui parler durement, mais j’ai attendu qu’il termine. Ensuite, je l’ai saisi par le col et je l’ai amené au Messager d’Allah ﷺ. J’ai dit : « Messager d’Allah, j’ai entendu cet homme réciter la sourate al-Furqan d’une façon différente de celle que tu m’as apprise. » Le Messager d’Allah ﷺ lui a alors demandé de réciter. Il a récité comme je l’avais entendu. Le Messager d’Allah ﷺ a dit : « C’est ainsi qu’elle a été révélée. » Puis il m’a dit de réciter. J’ai récité. Il a dit : « C’est ainsi qu’elle a été révélée. Le Coran a été révélé selon sept modes de lecture, alors récitez selon ce qui vous est le plus facile. »
