Aishah said:"The wives of the Prophet sent Fatimah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah, to the Messenger of Allah. She asked permission to enter when he was lying with me under my cover. He gave her permission to enter, and she said: 'O Messenger of Allah, your wives have sent me to you to ask you to be equitable with regard to the matter of the daughter of Abu Quhafah.' I ('Aishah) kept quiet and the Messenger of Allah said to her: 'O my daughter! Do you not love the one whom I love?' She said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Then love this one.' Fatimah stood up when she heard this and left the Messenger of Allah, and went back to the wives of the Prophet. She told them what she had said, and what he had said to her. They said to her: 'We do not think that you have been of any avail to us. Go back to the Messenger of Allah and say to him: Your wives are urging you to be equitable with regard to the matter of the daughter of Abu Quhafah.' Fatimah said: 'No, by Allah; I will never speak to him about her again.'" 'Aishah said: "So the wives of the Prophet sent Zainab bint Jahsh to the Messenger of Allah; she was one who was somewhat equal to me in rank in the eyes of the Messenger of Allah. And I have never seen a woman who was better in religious commitment than Zainab, more fearing of Allah, more honest in speech, more dutiful in upholding the ties of kinship, more generous in giving charity, and devoted in giving of herself in acts of charity, by means of which she sought to draw closer to Allah. But she was quick-tempered; however, she was also quick to calm down. She asked permission to enter upon the Messenger of Allah when he was with 'Aishah under her cover, in the same situation as when Fatimah had entered. The Messenger of Allah gave her permission to enter and she said: 'O Messenger of Allah, your wives have sent me to ask you to be equitable with regard to the matter of the daughter of Abu Quhafah.' Then she verbally abused me at length, and I was watching the Messenger of Allah to see if he would allow me to respond. Zainab went on until I realized that the Messenger of Allah would not disapprove if I responded. Then I spoke back to her in such a way, until I silenced her. Then the Messenger of Allah said: 'She is the daughter of Abu Bakr

Rapporté par 'Aishah : Les épouses du Prophète ont envoyé Fatimah, la fille du Messager d’Allah, auprès du Messager d’Allah. Elle a demandé la permission d’entrer alors qu’il était allongé avec moi sous ma couverture. Il lui a donné la permission d’entrer, et elle a dit : "Ô Messager d’Allah, tes épouses m’ont envoyée pour te demander d’être juste concernant la fille d’Abu Quhafah." Je ('Aishah) suis restée silencieuse et le Messager d’Allah lui a dit : "Ô ma fille ! N’aimes-tu pas celle que j’aime ?" Elle a répondu : "Oui." Il a dit : "Alors aime-la." Fatimah s’est levée en entendant cela et a quitté le Messager d’Allah, puis elle est retournée auprès des épouses du Prophète. Elle leur a raconté ce qu’elle avait dit et ce qu’il lui avait répondu. Elles lui ont dit : "Nous pensons que tu ne nous as pas aidées. Retourne voir le Messager d’Allah et dis-lui : Tes épouses te demandent d’être juste concernant la fille d’Abu Quhafah." Fatimah a dit : "Non, par Allah ; je ne lui parlerai plus jamais d’elle." 'Aishah a dit : "Alors les épouses du Prophète ont envoyé Zaynab bint Jahsh auprès du Messager d’Allah ; elle était à peu près mon égale aux yeux du Messager d’Allah. Je n’ai jamais vu de femme meilleure dans la foi que Zaynab, plus pieuse envers Allah, plus honnête dans ses paroles, plus attentive à maintenir les liens de parenté, plus généreuse en aumône, et plus dévouée dans ses œuvres pour se rapprocher d’Allah. Mais elle était prompte à se mettre en colère ; cependant, elle se calmait aussi rapidement. Elle a demandé la permission d’entrer auprès du Messager d’Allah alors qu’il était avec 'Aishah sous sa couverture, dans la même situation que lorsque Fatimah était entrée. Le Messager d’Allah lui a donné la permission d’entrer et elle a dit : "Ô Messager d’Allah, tes épouses m’ont envoyée pour te demander d’être juste concernant la fille d’Abu Quhafah." Puis elle m’a insultée longuement, et j’observais le Messager d’Allah pour voir s’il me permettrait de répondre. Zaynab a continué jusqu’à ce que je comprenne que le Messager d’Allah ne désapprouverait pas si je répondais. Alors je lui ai répondu de telle manière que je l’ai réduite au silence. Puis le Messager d’Allah a dit : "C’est la fille d’Abu Bakr
