It was narrated that Al-Ahnaf bin Qais said:"We set out for Hajj, and came to Al-Madinah intending to perform Hajj. While we were in our camping place unloading our mounts, someone came to us and said: 'The people have gathered in the Masjid and there is panic.' So we set out and found the people gathered around a group in the middle of the Masjid, among whom were 'Ali, Az-Zubair, Talhah and Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas. While we were like that, 'Uthman came, wearing a yellowish cloak with which he had covered his head. He said: Is 'Ali here? Is Talhah here? Is Az-Zubair here? Is Sa'd here? They said: Yes. He said: I adjure you by Allah, beside Whom there is none worthy of worship, are you aware that the Messenger of Allah said: Whoever buys the Mirbad of Banu so and so, Allah will forgive him, and I bought it for twenty or twenty-five thousand, then I came to the Messenger of Allah and told him, and he said: Add it to our Masjid and the reward for it will be yours? They said: By Allah, yes. He said: 'I adjure you by Allah, beside Whom there is none worthy of worship, are you aware that the Messenger of Allah said: Whoever buys the well of Rumah, Allah will forgive him, so I bought it for such and such an amount, then I came to the Messenger of Allah and told him, and he said: Give it to provide water for the Muslims, and the reward for it will be yours?' They said: By Allah, yes. He said: 'I adjure you by Allah, beside Whom there is none worthy of worship, are you aware that the Messenger of Allah said: Whoever equips these (men), Allah will forgive him, -meaning the army of Al-'Usrah (i.e. Tabuk)- so I equipped them until they were not lacking even a rope or a bridle?' They said: By Allah, yes. He said: O Allah, bear witness, O Allah, bear witness

Rapporté par Al-Ahnaf ibn Qais : « Nous sommes partis pour le Hajj et sommes arrivés à Médine avec l’intention de faire le pèlerinage. Pendant que nous étions installés, quelqu’un est venu nous dire : “Les gens se sont rassemblés à la mosquée et il y a de l’agitation.” Nous sommes donc allés voir et avons trouvé les gens réunis autour d’un groupe au milieu de la mosquée, parmi lesquels se trouvaient 'Ali, Az-Zubair, Talhah et Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas. Alors que nous étions là, 'Uthman arriva, portant un manteau jaunâtre sur la tête. Il demanda : “'Ali est-il là ? Talhah est-il là ? Az-Zubair est-il là ? Sa’d est-il là ?” Ils répondirent : “Oui.” Il dit : “Je vous adjure par Allah, nul autre n’est digne d’être adoré, savez-vous que le Messager d’Allah ﷺ a dit : Celui qui achète le Mirbad des Banû untel, Allah lui pardonnera, et je l’ai acheté pour vingt ou vingt-cinq mille, puis je suis allé voir le Messager d’Allah ﷺ et il m’a dit : Ajoute-le à notre mosquée et la récompense sera pour toi ?” Ils dirent : “Par Allah, oui.” Il dit : “Je vous adjure par Allah, nul autre n’est digne d’être adoré, savez-vous que le Messager d’Allah ﷺ a dit : Celui qui achète le puits de Rumah, Allah lui pardonnera, alors je l’ai acheté pour telle ou telle somme, puis je suis allé voir le Messager d’Allah ﷺ et il m’a dit : Donne-le pour fournir de l’eau aux musulmans, et la récompense sera pour toi ?” Ils dirent : “Par Allah, oui.” Il dit : “Je vous adjure par Allah, nul autre n’est digne d’être adoré, savez-vous que le Messager d’Allah ﷺ a dit : Celui qui équipe ces hommes, Allah lui pardonnera – c’est-à-dire l’armée d’Al-‘Usrah (Tabuk) – alors je les ai équipés jusqu’à ce qu’il ne leur manque même pas une corde ou une bride ?” Ils dirent : “Par Allah, oui.” Il dit : “Ô Allah, sois témoin, Ô Allah, sois témoin.” »
